Hello,
I use Access as my database. Can someone direct me to a good source to
determine if I need to upgrade to MsSQL and costs involved?
Thanks,
Dave
If you know nothing about MSSQL then what makes you think you might want to
upgrade? Is there something Access isn't doing for you?

I'm cross-posting this reply into microsoft.public.access in hopes that

Well after all it is just SQL Server with some stuff clamped down.
I would recommend this to lots of people, if only it came with Enterprise
Manager! There are a few shareware replacements, but IMHO, they suck.

Kill Old Sessions
I've got a few databases which users access using Terminal Server. I
noticed today I had several (20+) sessions which had a Last Batch date
which were days even weeks old.
I want to kill these old sessions if the Last Batch date is greater
than 5 hours.
I also noticed there are several background sessions being run by the
sa account on master db and they are several days old. I don't believe
I should kill these sessions.
Does anyone have a script they currently use to manage these old
sessions?
Izzy
I forgot to list, I'm using SQL Server 2000.
Thanks,

|||That is exactly the problem, most users are set up to be logged out of
terminal server at midnight if they are not already logged out.
BUT, I have users who work in our shop on 3rd shift who use the same
account as users on first shift.
I've explained too them they need to log out correctly, but of course
users do whatever they want anyway, and just give you lip service while
your in front of them.
Question:
In the example you sent, your query does not eliminate some sessions
from being killed. For instance, I have 4 which have this listed in the
"cmd" line:
LAZY WRITER
LOG WRITER
LOCK MONITOR
CHECKPOINT SLEEP
Is there going to be any negative or unexpected behavior if these get
killed?
Is there something I should query on to eliminate system processes?

These are system connections, and I'm pretty certain they can't be killed even if you try to (else
MS wouldn't done a good job protecting the system processes). You should add a filter to the SELECT

These are system connections, and I'm pretty certain they can't be killed ev
en if you try to (else
MS wouldn't done a good job protecting the system processes). You should add
a filter to the SELECT

Kill Old Sessions
I've got a few databases which users access using Terminal Server. I
noticed today I had several (20+) sessions which had a Last Batch date
which were days even weeks old.
I want to kill these old sessions if the Last Batch date is greater
than 5 hours.
I also noticed there are several background sessions being run by the
sa account on master db and they are several days old. I don't believe
I should kill these sessions.
Does anyone have a script they currently use to manage these old
sessions?

key violation, general sql error, connectin busy with another hstmt
We are getting this error periodically in a large app we are converting
from Access to SQL Server 2000. It uses BDE and ODBC for data access
and TTable/TQuery as well as TwwTable/TwwQuery components (from
woll2woll) under Delphi 6. It appears to happen when we are executing
TQuery.Open.
From what I've read, this is caused by ODBC not completing a result set
before processing another request. Which might be caused by having
queries run in multiple threads, but this is not the case."Doug Stephens" <dougstephens@.rogers.com> wrote in message

Basically, you can't have two open (SELECT) statements on the
same connection. For example,
Open query 1
Get some info from a record
Use that to set params in query 2
Open query 2 -- This will fail
This assumes both statements are attached to the same hDBC. It
is a result of using a client-side cursor for the hStmt's.
You'll have to use server-side cursors for the statements to make
this work. See MSDN.
This is one way to force a server-side cursor:
SQLSetStmtAttr( m_hStmt, SQL_ATTR_CURSOR_SCROLLABLE,
(SQLPOINTER) SQL_SCROLLABLE, 0 );
Good luck,
- Arnie|||So you can never have 2 open queries? I do that all the time, in one
thread. Maybe I'm not understanding. For example, this code works
fine, which creates 101 open queries:
--
procedure TForm1.ManyQueriesClick(Sender: TObject);
var qs : array[0..100] of TQuery ;
var q : Tquery;
var i : Integer;
begin
for i := 0 to 100 do begin
qs[i] := TQuery.Create(self);
q := qs[i];
q.databasename := 'WM';
q.SQL.Clear;
q.SQL.Add('SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERFIELDS');
statusbar1.SimpleText := 'Query ' + IntToStr(i);
q.active := true;
end;
for i := 0 to 100 do
qs[i].Free;
end;|||Arnie wrote:

You can't. It's an ODBC statement. The equivalent in Delphi
would be CursorLocation := clUseServer for TADO components.
Sorry, but I've totally forgotten about the BDE. It may use
server-side cursors by default.
The problem occurs in ODBC when nesting queries that use the same
connection handle. Open q1, read some field values, use these to
set params in q2 and then open q2. This last open will cause the
error. In theory, SQL Server 2005 has 'fixed' this 'feature',
though I haven't tried it yet.

Key Exists?
What's the best SQL statement to use to detect if a Key Exists in a
particular table?
I had been using SQLDMO within a VB app to access possible keys in the table
and then find if one matches what I'm looking for:
For X = 1 To SQLDMOConnection.Databases(UCase(DatabaseName)).Tables(TableNam
e)
.Keys.Count
If Trim(UCase(KeyName)) = UCase(Trim(SQLDMOConnection.Databases(UCase
(DatabaseName)).Tables(TableName).Keys(X).Name)) Then
KeyExists = True
Exit For
End If
Next X
I've decided not to do this, and instead use SQL statements to get the
information.
So I need some way of traversing keys on a table and see the names and find
a
match to thename I'm looking for.
How's the best way to do this?Okay. I've got some of what I need.
I know that I can use OBJECTPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID('tablename.fieldname'),
'IsPrimaryKey') to find out if a field is a key. Can I specify table/field
in the OBJECT_ID call?
Also, before I do this, I'd like to check the table to see if it has a
primary key.
So...
OBJECTPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID('tablename'),'T
ableHasPrimaryKey')
Now those are elements of what I need.
What are the full statements to make it work?

http://www.webservertalk.com/Uwe/Forum...amming/200512/1|||This would list all the tables in the current database that have a primary
key, and the name of the primary key on the table.
SELECT s1.[name] AS "Table", s2.[name] AS "Key"
FROM sysobjects s1 INNER JOIN sysobjects s2
ON s2.[parent_obj]=s1.[id]
WHERE s2.[xtype]='PK'
You could add a WHERE clause to look at a specific table and an aggregate
COUNT to get a 0 or 1 returned from the statement.
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM sysobjects s1 INNER JOIN sysobjects s2
ON s2.[parent_obj]=s1.[id]
WHERE s2.[xtype]='PK' AND s1.[name]='table_name'
Returns 1 if table_name has a primary key, and zero if it doesn't.

particular table?
I had been using SQLDMO within a VB app to access possible keys in the table
and then find if one matches what I'm looking for:
For X = 1 To SQLDMOConnection.Databases(UCase(DatabaseName)).Tables(TableNam
e)
.Keys.Count
If Trim(UCase(KeyName)) = UCase(Trim(SQLDMOConnection.Databases(UCase
(DatabaseName)).Tables(TableName).Keys(X).Name)) Then
KeyExists = True
Exit For
End If
E. coli Happens.|||It would sure be nice if someone could take the pieces and put them together

Message posted via webservertalk.com
http://www.webservertalk.com/Uwe/Forum...amming/200512/1|||This would list all the tables in the current database that have a primary
key, and the name of the primary key on the table.
SELECT s1.[name] AS "Table", s2.[name] AS "Key"
FROM sysobjects s1 INNER JOIN sysobjects s2
ON s2.[parent_obj]=s1.[id]
WHERE s2.[xtype]='PK'
You could add a WHERE clause to look at a specific table and an aggregate
COUNT to get a 0 or 1 returned from the statement.
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM sysobjects s1 INNER JOIN sysobjects s2
ON s2.[parent_obj]=s1.[id]
WHERE s2.[xtype]='PK' AND s1.[name]='table_name'
Returns 1 if table_name has a primary key, and zero if it doesn't.

kerberos logon failure
I recently started receiveing an error message on a Win2K server that has SQ

that clearly states they have read/write access. At around the same time th

in the security log that the Kerberos account experienced logon failure with
Event ID 537. This error code just states unable to logon for unknown reas

DaveNot sure I understand the question - what do you mean by read-only access?
If you look at sp_protects or something similar in the database are the
user's permissions changed?

Keeping Domain & SQL Access In Sync
Does anyone know of a sample script I could get access to that would
automatically compare disabled/deleted domain accounts to the SQL Security
Logins and keep them "in sync" without any interaction from the SQL
administrator? We're wanting to eliminate the need of sending manual
notifications to the SQL administrator of terminated employees and running
the sp_denylogin. Instead, we want to just create a script that would go ou
t
to all of our SQL servers and automatically remove accounts no longer active
in the domain itself. Does Active Directory provide any tools to do this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
ColetteHi
Why don't you rather use Domain Groups?
Give a domain group the correct access, and add the user to the group. A
user can be in multiple groups and when the NT accounts gets added or
removed, there is no maintenance from the DBA side.

Active Directory. Strange...but true. I have instructed them we need to g
o
this route or they need to manually notify the SQL Admins based off the
"security form" of a termination involving SQL access.
P.S. The servers were already set up this way prior to my hire. I'm trying
to fix it. Just wanted to throw that out there...
Thanks again.

Then you will need to write some code for this.
Call sp_validatelogins, this will give you a list of all NT Logins that are
no longer valid.
Then based on that result, call sp_revokelogin to remove the user from the

Keeping a Production and Test db insync
I have just finished upsizing an Access database to SQL Server 2k. Now the SQL Server need to be run on a test basis to determine if i need to make more changes to the front-end (Access). The problem I am facing is how to keep the two databases in sync while I am testing. Any suggestions?
Also any suggestion or comments on how to run a test setup like this (in parrallel) are also welcome since this is my first time attempting a project like this.
Let me know if anyone needs more info.
Thanks in advance.How often?
I do a dump of p[roduction nightly and restore to dev every day...

Keep Group Data Together
In Access there was a keep together...
How do I make sure data in a group moves to the next page if it will not fit
on the current page?
--
Thank You, LeoHello Leo,
Thank you for your post!
Regarding your question, you can add page break at each group as you want.
For example:
1. Click Layout
2. Click a table, and click table_cateory footer row icon and select the
row, right click group footer handle button
3. Select edit group
4. Select Page break at end box and click OK
Hope this information is helpful.

Thank you for your reply. You can also define the page size for a report.
Rendering extensions that support page size create page breaks based on the
page size. Rendering extensions that do not support page size ignore page
size. To change the page size for a report, change the PageHeight and
PageWidth properties of the report.
Hope this helps. Have a great day!

How do I know where the pages ends when the data is changeing all the time?
Is there no setting like in access that will keep a group of data together
dynamically?
If I change the page height and width it will not print correctly...
Thanks, Leo

Thank you for your reply.
If you check "Select Page break at end" box as I mentioned, the there shall
be a page break at the end of each group. Also, the group can be in
multiple pages if a group is not fit in one page according to the page size
but the last page may not full because there is a page break at the end of
each group.
Have a great day!

||||Hello Peter,
I dont think I am communicating what I need very well.
I need the groups to continue unless it splits it in the middle of a group.
The group data is generally small and I do not want the groups to be on new
pages every time.
Thanks, Leo

Thank you for your reply. It seems that you do not want group information
to be split to a new page. Based on my research, there is no method at
present to achieve this goal. I am sorry for the inconvenience. We strive
to capture any product issues or product feedback so as to ensure that we
are continuously developing Microsoft products to meet customer needs. Your
feedback is taken seriously. I will make sure it is routed through the
proper channels and thank you again for your valuable feedback. You can
also post your suggestions to MSWISH: mswish@.microsoft.com.
Also, you may try to use this option to see if can partially meet your
requirement:
1. Click Layout
2. Click a table, and click table_cateory footer row icon and select the
row, right click group footer handle button
3. Select edit group
4. Select "Repeat group header" and "Repeat group footer" and click OK.
Each page shall have group information at this time.
If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to respond
back.

If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to respond
back.
Thanks & Regards,
Peter Yang
