key to db error code meaning?

tbh
Open an ERROR.LOG to see what is going on? Deadlocks?

The generic error messages are in master.dbo.sysmessages. E.G.,
Select * From master.dbo.sysmessages Where error = 208
But when you actually get the errors, SQL Server will pass back a string as
well as the error message. This string will have the parameters replaced
with actual values. For example, error 208 is invalid object name, but when
you actually get the message, it will tell you which object name was
invalid. But if whatever connection method you are using is swallowing the
error text and only returning the error number, you can look it up in
sysmessages. You can also search on it in BOL. BOL doesn't have every
error, but it gives additional info about some of them.

Keeping the transaction log small during initialization

How do I keep the transaction log small during initialization of a
subscription. The size of the transaction gets to be at least four
times the size of the data and fills up the hard drive.
Is there a way to initialize the database without keeping the
transaction logs?
I can't seem to truncate and shrink during initialization either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Michael Swart
There is no real way to do this, other than a no sync subscription, or to
kick everyone off your publication database while you generate the snapshot.
You might also want to run DBCC Opentran to see if there are any open
transactions which are causing your tlog to balloon.

Keeping SQL 2000 databases in synch after restore.

We have 4 different databases, running on sql server 2000. I scheduled
the database to be backed up at 5:00, and every hour for the trans
log.
If we have a hardware failure and have to restore from backup. how do
I make sure that the database are all starting at the same time. (if
database common takes 2 min to back up and database customer takes 30
min to back up) how do I make sure these 2 database are at the same
point in time.
Is there anything I can do in my sql backup job to have the backup's
end at the same time?
Currently all of the backup are different jobs.
Nicholas.GadaczSo you're saying there are transactional integrity reasons why the DB's all
need to be restored to the exact same point in time?
RESTORE LOG allows you to specify STOPAT for point in time recovery, but
RESTORE DATABASE doesn't.
I can't think of a clean way to do that for a full database without using
tran log restores...

answer you are looking for. But this is kind of a design issue. If there
are transactional integrity issues, the easiest and cleanest way is to put
those objects in the same database. You may have name conflicts, but those
will be much easier to resolve now than the issues you have started to run
into now. What if tomorrow you want to send a snapshot replication of five
related tables? You will have the same issue.
If you do take my advice and put your databases into one, a good way to
avoid naming conflicts in your code, is to script one of the databases in
its entirety, do a search and replace and change all occurences of
conflicting names at the object definition as well as the references in code
simultaneously. Then you can put the two together without conflict. Again,
if you decide to do that, I can be made available for assistance remotely.
Pls remove NO_SPAM(s) from my email if you need to reach me.

Keep one connection open for log

I am using SQL 7. If I open one connection for long, I notice that as I keep
running more SQL statement my I/O and CPU Usage keep growing. Even though I
am done with the connection not running any statement I still see those
resouces being used.
Is it a bug in SQL 7 or it happens with 2000 also. Is it a memory leak ?
Please help.
Hi
Look up 'Connection Pooling' in BOL.
The MDAC driver keeps the connection open by default 120 seconds, and if
another query, to the same saver, using the same credentials comes along on
the same client machine., it just re-uses the existing connection.

Well, then give us more information. Give us outputs of sp_who2 over
intervals and run profiler at the same time to see what is being submitted
to SQL Server. You might find that there are requests being submitted. There
is no known bug where counters increase themselves for no reason.

KDC Problem

Hello:
A while back I started getting KDC errors in my System log on my domain
controller. The error is:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: KDC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 3/16/2005
Time: 9:34:08 AM
User: N/A
Computer: TPADC1
Description:
There are multiple accounts with name MSSQLSvc/elvis.aviinc.local:1433 of
type 10.
After researching this I did a "ldifde" dump of the active directory
database and then searched the dump and found a double entry for
"MSSQLSvc/elvis.aviinc.local:1433". I found it duplicated on one of the
domain admins accounts. Since this appeared to be a duplicate I decided to
delete it. Within a few minutes I had problems with connections to SQL. I
put it back right away and then everything was working fine again.
Obviously the SQL server has some kind of a link to this...
I have done some searching but have not found anything on it. Does anyone
have any suggestions on cleaning this up?

Thanks for replying to my post.
This is the article I followed which allowed me to find the duplicate but is
was on a user account not a computer account. I think perhaps SQL has
something in it hard coded to reference this user account.

|||Yes. To determine which domain account is the one that is currently being
used, we can use Adsiedit.msc to delete one of the
MSSQLSvc/elvis.aviinc.local:1433 SPNs, then *restart* the SQL service(s).
The SQL service will re-add the SPN on the currently used service account.
If it was not readded, then the duplicate has been removed.
Adsiedit.msc and Ldp.exe are included on the Windows 2000 installation CD.
You can install these tools from the CD in Support\Tools\Setup.exe

Thanks for replying to my post.
The error which was appearing on the SQL Enterprise Manager was, "Unable to initialize SSPI context".

You may want to restart the SQL Server service after you have removed the
duplicate SPN. If the SPN is re-added, remove the other SPN and then
restart the SQL Server service.

Thanks for replying to my post. Do you know of any tech net articles which
may explain this behavior. The reason I ask is due to the sensitive nature
of SQL we are going to have a meeting before we attempt any changes.

KDC Problem

Any suggestions welcome...

--=_NextPart_000_012E_01C52AF1.C085DB50--|||Hi Harrison,
You may want to restart the SQL Server service after you have removed the
duplicate SPN. If the SPN is re-added, remove the other SPN and then
restart the SQL Server service.
Feel free to let me know if this resolves your problem.
Sincerely,
William Wang

Thanks for replying to my post. Do you know of any tech net articles which
may explain this behavior. The reason I ask is due to the sensitive nature
of SQL we are going to have a meeting before we attempt any changes.
Thanks.

I have found two accounts, Administrator who is an user account, and the
other account is a computer account called NS, but NS is the name of the
server where SQL Server is running.
What should i do?
I hope you can help. Thanks

KDC Problem

Any suggestions welcome...

used, we can use Adsiedit.msc to delete one of the
MSSQLSvc/elvis.aviinc.local:1433 SPNs, then *restart* the SQL service(s).

Do you know of any tech net articles which
may explain this behavior. The reason I ask is due to the sensitive nature
of SQL we are going to have a meeting before we attempt any changes.
